India to strengthen student and academic partnerships with UAE, ETEducation
India and the United Arab Emirates are taking significant steps to strengthen their bilateral partnership, while focusing on education and digital finance, following UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to New Delhi on January 19, 2026.
The discussions aimed to expand collaboration across universities and financial systems while also exploring ways to make cross-border education and payments more efficient and accessible.
The two countries plan to expand collaboration between universities and educational institutions, building on the offshore campuses of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management–Ahmedabad in the UAE.
Student exchanges are expected to create a knowledge bridge, and both sides aim to expand Innovation and Tinkering Labs in schools and colleges.
Additionally, India’s Digilocker system could be integrated with UAE platforms to allow seamless authentication of Indian academic degrees and documents, which would simplify access to education and professional opportunities.
Strengthening financial sector links
India and the UAE also agreed to enhance digital financial cooperation. Plans are underway to interlink the national payment platforms of both countries to enable faster, more efficient, and cost-effective cross-border payments.
Beyond education and finance, the two countries are focusing on science, technology, and innovation, including artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and space initiatives. Discussions also covered energy security, infrastructure projects such as Special Investment Regions, smart urban townships, and transport connectivity.
Cultural ties and people-to-people engagement remain a priority, with plans for youth and academic exchanges and the establishment of a ‘House of India’ in Abu Dhabi. Defence and security cooperation, counter-terrorism collaboration, and regional stability were also highlighted during the visit.
The talks signal a broadening of the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, covering education, finance, technology, trade, and cultural initiatives, reflecting the two nations’ intent to strengthen long-term bilateral relations.
