In 2022, I posted GOOGLE’S NEW “ALOUD” TOOL COULD BE A HUGE ASSET TO TEACHERS WHO WANT TO MAKE THEIR CONTENT ACCESSIBLE TO ELLS. Google unveiled an experimental tool that would use AI to dub any video a person created and uploaded into any language.
I discussed how this kind of tool could allow teachers to summarize content in videos for their ELL students and then let them hear it in their home languages, and how teachers could create videos accessible to parents.
Then, a year later, Google made another announcement, which I described in Big News For ELL Teachers, Students & Their Families – Google Announces Video Dubbing Feature Finally (Almost) Here.
It’s now two years later and, according to TechCrunch:
YouTube announced on Wednesday that its multi-language audio feature has officially launched after a two-year-long pilot. Now, millions of YouTubers can add dubbing to their videos in different languages, helping them reach a wider global audience. The rollout is expected to happen over the coming weeks.
I don’t yet see that feature on my YouTube channel’s dashboard, however. Assuming Google is actually going to deliver this time, it could be a great tool for teachers and schools to assist English Language Learners, and to communicate with families.
