UP govt thrust on literature, libraries to groom students, ETEducation
Lucknow: To address excessive screen time among students, develop their critical and logical thinking skills and cultivate greater interest in books, state govt has asked all govt schools to allow their students access to govt district libraries.
Additional chief secretary, basic and secondary education, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, issued detailed directives to instil reading habits in students. He asked schools to issue one book per child every week.
The book should be outside the curriculum, such as a storybook, novel, biography, or inspirational literature, to encourage independent reading. After reading, students should present summaries of their books during school assembly to develop their communication skills.
Fostering love for reading, Sharma said students who read most books each month and present their summaries in school assembly or class will be awarded a certificate of appreciation. In addition, schools have been asked to launch a campaign titled ‘No Bouquet, Only Book’.
Under this campaign, winners and participants in competitions and cultural programmes held in all schools and govt district libraries across the state should be presented with books instead of trophies or mementos, so that they develop an interest in and motivation for reading.
Further, teachers and staff of schools and govt district libraries have also been asked to read books themselves and share summaries of them with students in the classroom, so that students develop enthusiasm for reading.
Sharma, in his order, also suggested activities such as monthly project work to encourage students to use library books as references for their project work. Book discussions will give students an opportunity to express their views and review the books they have read at a designated time.
Students should also be encouraged to write and illustrate their own stories and narrate stories in an engaging way using puppets, role-playing, etc.
Activities like creating their own bookmark, suggesting books to classmates by students who have a keen interest in reading and conducting reading activities based on subjects such as the Constitution, environment, art and culture have also been recommended by Sharma.
