Union demands 2L cover for teachers, engaging educated unemployed, ETEducation
Ahmedabad: As preparations begin for Census 2027, a planning meeting was recently convened by the census directorate, in which representatives of educational organisations were invited to share their views. At the meeting at the Census Office, the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshanik Mahasangh submitted 13 suggestions to the state govt and census authorities regarding the involvement of teachers in census duties.
According to information available, the first phase of Census 2027 — covering house listing and the housing census —will be conducted in Gujarat between April and Sept this year.
The union expressed concern that assigning non-academic responsibilities, such as census work, to teachers adversely affects classroom teaching and overall education quality. It pointed out that teachers are often blamed for poor learning outcomes, while frequent deployment in non-teaching duties disrupts academic work. The union said that teachers be relieved from booth-level officers and similar assignments, and that educated unemployed youth be engaged instead.
Among the key demands were an end to the practice of issuing arrest warrants against teachers during national assignments, provision of accident and life insurance cover of Rs 2 crore for teachers engaged in census work, appointment of separate technical and tablet operators for data entry, and compensatory leave for work done during holidays. The union also urged authorities not to assign women teachers to remote or sensitive areas, and to exempt sick and differently abled staff from census duties.
