Students to decide Osmania University’s future, says Chief Minister, ETEducation
Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday said students will play a central role in shaping Osmania University’s redevelopment, with the state govt preparing to place multiple development models before them and collect feedback through drop boxes and a dedicated website.
The CM will visit the OU campus on Dec 10, and a final decision on projects and funding is expected by the end of the month. The public meeting planned in front of the Arts College building on Dec 7, as part of the Congress govt’s two-year celebrations, has now been rescheduled for Dec 10.
At a review meeting, officials briefed the CM on proposed works across the campus. He examined detailed presentations outlining options for new hostel buildings, academic blocks, internal roads and an auditorium, and suggested several changes and additions.
Revanth instructed officials to consider tapping urban forestry funds for projects in the campus’s green zones and to explore the creation of new water bodies while conserving existing ones.
On student amenities, he stressed the need for future-ready planning. The CM said facilities in new hostels and academic blocks should be designed for 10% additional capacity for every hundred students and constructed in a way that avoids inconvenience to students and staff.
“The state govt is ready to spend any amount of money for the development of Osmania University. The historical and heritage buildings within the university premises should be preserved. Instead of spending huge amounts on renovations of old buildings that do not have historical importance, priority should be given to the construction of new buildings,” he said.
He also directed that cycle tracks, walking paths and other campus features receive careful attention, adding that symbols reflecting the “fighting spirit of OU students” should be incorporated into the design.
