Severe cold halts academic activities in Bihar schools, ETEducation
Patna: Most districts in Bihar have extended the suspension of academic activities up to Class VIII due to intensifying cold conditions and repeated warnings issued by the IMD. District administrations across the state have invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to enforce closures in govt and private schools, pre-schools, anganwadi centres and coaching institutes.
In Patna, district magistrate Thiyagarajan S M ordered the closure of all schools up to Class VIII until Jan 8. The directive follows a sharp fall in temperatures and dense fog that has severely impacted visibility and safety. For students of classes IX to XII, academic activities are permitted only between 10.30am and 3.30pm.
East Champaran district magistrate Saurabh Jorwal imposed stricter measures, suspending all educational activities up to Class XII until Jan 7 due to severe cold waves and icy westerly winds.
In Buxar, district magistrate Sahila ordered the closure of schools up to Class VIII from January 5 to January 8. Bhagalpur district magistrate Nawal Kishor Chaudhary issued a similar order, shutting schools up to Class VIII until Jan 8, citing extreme cold and hazardous fog conditions.
Gaya district magistrate Shashank Shubhankar restricted classes up to Class V until Jan 7 while allowing classes VI and above to function only between 10am and 2pm. In Bhojpur, academic activities for classes I to VIII remain prohibited on Jan 5 and 6 with higher classes restricted to a 10am to 3pm schedule.
Muzaffarpur and Rohtas districts have also suspended all academic activities up to Class VIII until Jan 7.
Across all affected districts, special classes and examinations related to board and pre-board schedules have been exempted from these restrictions. Authorities said block development officers and police station heads have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the orders to prevent cold-related health risks among students.>
