Recognition of 295 BEd colleges in Maharashtra withdrawn, Education News, ET Education
Mumbai: The National Council for Teachers’ Education (NCTE) has withdrawn the recognition of close to 300 BEd colleges in the state.
Without this recognition, these colleges will not be able to admit students in the academic session 2025-26. According to the council, these colleges failed to submit their performance appraisal reports (PAR), which indicate the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards set by them.
Officials said colleges were given multiple reminders, and deadlines were extended to provide them with enough time to submit the reports before taking this step. These colleges constitute one-fourth of the total colleges, including diploma, BEd, and MEd ones, in the state. Of the 380 institutions in the western region, 295 are from Maharashtra alone.
As part of the conditions for recognition, the NCTE insists on the submission of a PAR annually.
Apart from the annual statement of accounts duly audited by a chartered accountant, the report also mandates the examination and periodic review of the implementation of the norms, guidelines, and standards laid down by the council. Based on this, in the general body meeting of the council held in Aug last year, it was decided to direct all teacher education institutions to submit their PAR for 2021-22 and 2022-23 on the NCTE portal.
The deadline to submit the PAR was extended at least thrice, said an official, adding that multiple reminders were also given through public notices.
The NCTE order mentions, “on careful consideration of the reply/non-submission of reply to the show-cause notices”, the western region committee decided that the recognition granted to the institutions will be withdrawn. It added that the institutions are not permitted to make further admissions in the courses listed in the order from 2025-26.
A state govt official said that there are serious lacunae in these institutions and the council probably took the right step in withdrawing their recognition, but for the benefit of students, the state is trying to work out a solution.
“These institutions seek NOCs on the condition that they would fulfil all the norms, but fail to do so,” said an official.
