
P Raveendran appointed Calicut University vice-chancellor, ETEducation
Kozhikode: Governor and chancellor Rajendra Arlerkar appointed noted scientist P Raveendran as vice-chancellor of Calicut University.
Raveendran, a professor in chemistry department at the university, had been serving as vice-chancellor-in-charge since July 2024. Governor selected him from a panel of three names submitted by the vice-chancellor search and selection committee.
A native of Pulamanthole in Malappuram district, Raveendran obtained his PhD from IIT-Madras in 1998 and was postdoctoral visiting scientist at University of Gottingen, Germany, during 1999-2000.
His major research areas include green chemistry, nanoscience, carbon dioxide utilization and computational chemistry. He has published several internationally recognized research works, including studies on environmentally friendly methods for nanoparticle synthesis.
In 2000, he was awarded an NSF postdoctoral research associateship to work at Science and Technology Centre for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes at University of North Carolina, US.
During his tenure there during 2000-03, he made several seminal contributions in green chemistry and nanotechnology.
From 2003-06, he worked at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan, as a Fellow of Japan Society for Promotion of Science. He was also a recipient of CREST (Core Research in Evolutional Science & Technology) fellowship from govt of Japan and worked as a senior researcher in the institute.
In Dec 2005, he returned to India and joined chemistry department at University of Calicut, as a reader and became a professor in 2011.
He has authored several high impact research publications and has a few international patent applications to his credit. His current research interests are in vibrational spectroscopy, green chemistry, nano sciences and molecular sociology.
