Only few takers for 1,400 seats in Gujarat, ETEducation
Ahmedabad: Following the All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) decision to allow technical colleges to conduct admissions twice a year, Gujarat has launched a second phase of the engineering admission process to fill vacant seats across the state.
Registrations opened through the degree and diploma engineering admission committees, but student response has been low. Official data shows five new applications for 372 vacant degree engineering seats and 40 applications for 1,100 vacant diploma seats.
Eligible candidates will be called for in-person counselling, and the seat allotment process is expected to be completed before Jan 19. The second phase was initiated after central and state boards moved to a system of holding Class 12 examinations twice a year, a model already adopted in Gujarat. The state opened fresh registrations to fill seats left vacant after the regular degree engineering admission cycle. Under the policy, govt engineering colleges will offer admissions in this phase only in branches where more than 30% of seats are vacant.
Admission committee sources said 43 applications were received for 372 vacant govt degree engineering seats, but only five were from new applicants. The remaining 38 applicants were already enrolled in colleges and are not eligible for the second phase, making their applications invalid. A similar pattern has been reported in govt diploma engineering admissions. Of the 40 applicants for 1,100 vacant seats, several were already studying elsewhere and will be disqualified. Eligible candidates will be allotted seats through in-person counselling.
