Mangalore University faces opposition over exams during year-end holidays, ETEducation
Mangaluru: Students, parents, and college managements have urged Mangalore University (MU) to avoid conducting semester examinations during the Christmas and New Year break. This request comes after the university scheduled exams on Dec 29, 30, 31, and Jan 1, 2026, despite notified holidays from Dec 25 to Jan 1, 2026, in its academic calendar of events.
Traditionally, colleges under Mangalore University have observed Christmas holidays. Last year, too, MU scheduled examinations during the Christmas and New Year break, but rescheduled only after colleges expressed opposition.
“The districts under MU have been observing one week of Christmas and New Year holidays since the time they were under Madras University. This special provision continued under Mysore University and Karnataka University as well. Mangalore University, too, followed the same until last year, when it planned to hold examinations during this time. The reasons given by university officials are unsatisfactory, saying that the semester is delayed and it further affects the upcoming semester. By extending holidays for a week, nothing is going to change,” criticised a senior professor.
During the Christmas holidays, the majority of the students, both local and from other states, return home for festivities with their families. It is also a time in Mangaluru when there are many family functions scheduled. “How will we attend them?” a student questioned.
H Devendrappa, registrar (evaluation) at Mangalore University, maintained that there was opposition from the college to not schedule examinations during the Christmas and New Year break. On the other side, there is also a suggestion from private colleges to conduct examinations at the earliest, as the classes of this ongoing semester were extended for another month. “The delay of exams will lead to several issues. Therefore, the examinations are scheduled during the Christmas and New Year break after consultation with all stakeholders,” he added.
