Lucknow University students develop AI tool for real-time Hindi subtitles, ETEducation
Lucknow: In a stride towards digital inclusivity, BTech students from the faculty of engineering and technology, Lucknow University, are developing an AI-powered software tool that can generate real-time subtitles in Hindi and also translate spoken content from other Indian and foreign languages into Hindi.
The software features emotion detection to reflect the speaker’s tone, specialized accessibility support for hearing-impaired individuals and the ability to function both online and offline.
This innovation is designed to provide Hindi subtitles across television broadcasts, online learning platforms and live events, making Hindi digitally stronger and more accessible.
While subtitle technologies in English and other global languages have advanced rapidly, Hindi has long remained underserved.
This project aims to bridge that gap by combining speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and subtitle rendering into a user-friendly system.
The initiative is being carried out under the mentorship of Associate Professor, department of computer science and engineering, Himanshu Pandey. “This innovation will significantly enhance the digital experience for Hindi language users, making it more seamless, inclusive, and globally competitive,” said Pandey.
The student team comprises of Ranjit Singh, Soumya Singh, and Priyanshu Kumar, who spoke about the social impact of their work.
“We wanted to build something that not only uses cutting-edge AI but also empowers our own language. More importantly, we see it as a tool of inclusion, especially for people with hearing challenges,” said Ranjit Singh.
Soumya Singh added, “In classrooms, this can be a game-changer for teachers and students alike, but its real impact will be felt by individuals who otherwise miss out on live conversations, lectures, or broadcasts due to hearing impairments.”
