Lock Jadavpur University hostels during puja break, ETEducation
Kolkata: Lock the Jadavpur University hostels within 48 hours and keep them out of bounds during the puja vacation, the Calcutta High Court directed the varsity authorities on Friday. The court also directed the Jadavpur PS OC to inspect every hostel within 48 hours and submit a report.
Following the order, JU issued a notice requesting all boarders to “vacate the hostel within 48 hours”. The notice also stated that all hostels will remain closed until Oct 7. “During the vacation, no unauthorised persons will be allowed to enter the university campus,” read the notice.
The division bench of justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De also directed that it would be the university authority’s duty to ensure that no unauthorised person enters during the vacation. If needed, the authorities can take assistance from Jadavpur police station. The registrar (Acting) and pro VC were given the responsibility to keep the hostel under lock.
Education minister Bratya Basu welcomed the judge’s order, saying: “The judge has given such a verdict because there is concern and apprehension about Jadavpur. I am aware of who is causing chaos there.”
Engineering faculty students in an email to JU authorities said that the sudden eviction notice prioritizes administrative convenience over student welfare and basic rights because it is neither possible for students to get tickets in such short time nor book private lodges.
