Kerala University registrar moves HC to revoke suspension, ETEducation
Kochi: Kerala University registrar K S Anil Kumar, who has been under suspension for the past four months, has approached high court seeking to revoke his suspension, despite the university syndicate having taken a stance in his favour.
The bench of Justice N Nagaresh on Tuesday admitted Anil Kumar’s petition, issued notice to the respondents, including the vice-chancellor, and posted the matter for Nov 18.
Anil Kumar was suspended by the vice-chancellor on July 2 in connection with the ‘Bharat Mata’ controversy that arose during a function held on June 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
The registrar had cancelled permission to use the Senate Hall after the organisers displayed a picture of Bharat Mata on stage, citing a violation of university guidelines. The vice-chancellor later suspended him, alleging dereliction of duty, particularly since the governor, who is also the chancellor of the university, had attended the event.
In an earlier petition filed by Anil Kumar challenging his suspension, HC had directed the vice-chancellor to convene a syndicate meeting through the registrar in charge to decide whether the suspension should continue, leaving the matter to the syndicate’s discretion. Accordingly, a meeting was convened on Nov 1, during which the issue was included as an agenda item.
In his latest petition, Anil Kumar contended that although the syndicate meeting had decided to revoke his suspension, no orders have yet been issued allowing him to rejoin service. He further stated that the minutes of the syndicate meeting held on Nov 1 have also not yet been published.
