New Delhi: Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University will set up an offshore campus in the Republic of Guyana, becoming the first state university in Delhi to do so and among the very few institutes across India to go abroad.

The campus, to be set up with support from Govt of Guyana, has received the in-principle approval from Delhi govt and the regulatory clearance from Guyana’s National Accreditation Council.

Guyana Online Academy of Learning, under the country’s education ministry, approved the campus last Dec. Guyana govt will grant a building to start the campus and facilitate the regulatory requirements, the approval stated. The institution will offer “new-age academic programmes” such as computer science and applications, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, biotechnology and management to strengthen educational and cultural ties between India and Guyana, it added.

Delhi Directorate of Higher Education, which conveyed the in-principle approval to the university this Aug, directed it to draft an MoU in consultation with legal experts and comply with all norms.

A university official said the MoU, being drafted with Guyana’s education department, will outline details such as the cost structure, funding model, student intake, programme levels and faculty deployment. “Discussions are still on to finalise these points,” the official said, adding that classes are expected to begin from the next session.
