IIT-Indore bats for Hindi as working language in science & technology education, ETEducation
Indore: As higher education and research in India continue to be dominated by English, the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I), stepped up efforts to position Hindi as a functional language for scientific and technological learning, saying this can improve comprehension and widen access to knowledge.
The initiative is being driven through Abhyuday-3, a two-day National Technical Hindi Seminar that started on Jan 5 IIT-I. The seminar is being jointly organised by IIT Indore in collaboration with IIT Jodhpur and the CSIR–National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research, with a focus on promoting and strengthening the use of technical Hindi in higher education, research, science and technology.
At the institute, select first-year lectures are being delivered in Hindi, research abstracts are being compiled in accordance with prescribed official language standards and classroom discussions increasingly encourage the use of Hindi to explain scientific concepts.
IIT-I director Suhas Joshi said, “The initiative represents a strong step towards realising the national vision of connecting knowledge and science with the vernacular language. Strengthening technical Hindi would ensure wider dissemination of knowledge and reinforce India’s linguistic diversity.”
Faculty members said the emphasis is on removing linguistic barriers in technical education and improving conceptual clarity, particularly for students from Hindi medium backgrounds.
One of the key outcomes of Abhyuday–3 was the release of Smarika, a compilation of 26 peer-reviewed research papers written in Hindi. The papers were presented across two technical sessions — science and engineering and digital technology and innovation.
