HRC takes note of plaint on ‘ideological harassment’ of student, ETEducation
Chandigarh: Taking cognizance of allegations of ‘ideological harassment and academic victimization‘ at a private university in Sonepat, Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) has sought reports from the additional chief secretary (education), University Grants Commission (UGC), and the university’s registrar.
The Sonipat police commissioner has also been asked to submit a report on the issue.
HHRC member Deep Bhatia has taken cognizance of a complaint filed by Vishav Bajaj, who alleged that his son, a first-year student, was subjected to continuous harassment, humiliation and discriminatory conduct by two professors. The complaint alleges that on Nov 3, 2025, the student was harassed in class for praising Indian govt, the Prime Minister and Indian Army. It claims that trouble began on Oct 31, 2025, after the student submitted an essay on ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’, which allegedly did not find favour with certain faculty members who began ‘targeting him’. He was allegedly humiliated in class for his academic review of the film and marked as failed in the subject.
After the student approached the vice-chancellor, an inquiry was conducted by the executive dean of the university, who found the failure unjustified, and the student was declared passed, says the complaint.
Following this episode, two professors developed a ‘hostility’ towards his son, says the complainant, expressing apprehension that the student may be “falsely implicated in fabricated allegations”. He has again been declared failed in the subject ‘projection drawing’ because he refused to withdraw the complaint, says his father. He also claimed that the matter was reported to various authorities, including police, but no action has been taken so far. HHRC will hear the matter on Feb 19.
