Himachal governor stresses quality education in rural areas, ETEducation
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Monday emphasised the critical need for quality education in rural areas, stating that educational institutions should be evaluated not only by infrastructure, but by the standard of education and the nurturing of students’ talents.
Shukla made these remarks while inaugurating undergraduate programmes at Sarvepalli Dr Radhakrishnan College of Education, Nogli, in Rampur subdivision of Shimla district. He highlighted the pivotal role of teachers and teacher training, emphasising that true education cultivated the spirit of a teacher in learners. He stressed that training should align with Indian values and ethos, noting that in Indian tradition, the guru was revered as a guide shaping society. Drawing on examples from mythology, he mentioned Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, who followed the ‘guru-shishya’ tradition.
Shukla urged the college to uphold Dr Radhakrishnan’s ideals, viewing teachers as architects of character, and said the new undergraduate courses—BA, BSc, and BCom—would create opportunities for local students, promoting self-reliance. He also highlighted the National Education Policy’s role in instilling values, ethics, and a connection to India’s great thinkers, while emphasising the need to combat drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh.
