
Deputy Education Officer Arrested for Rs 2 Lakh Bribe Demand from Teachers, ETEducation
Nashik: The anti-corruption bureau on Sunday arrested Chandrakant Patil (41), the deputy education officer (primary) of zilla parishad, Dhule, and the administrative officer, education department, Malegaon Municipal Corporation, for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from teachers to clear their applications.A group of 20 teachers, who were employed with the education department prior to 2005, presented their request for sanctioning their applications to benefit from the pension scheme.
According to deputy superintendent of ACB, Suresh Shirsath, “The teachers registered a complaint with us in Aug about the officer seeking a bribe. The ACB verified the demand on two occasions. The ACB also laid traps a couple of times, but the officer evaded them. Finally, a complaint was registered with the Pawarwadi police station in Malegaon under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the officer was arrested.”
Patil has been remanded in custody for three days.
The officer said that a group of 20 teachers who were employed with the education dept before Oct 2005 applied in Feb 2024 to the administrative officer, education department, Malegaon Municipal Corporation, to approve their request, which benefited them with a pension after retirement.
This request followed state govt decision that the teachers recruited and employed before Oct 2005 would benefit from the pension, but their applications had to be approved by the respective heads of the departments, here, the administrative officer of the education department of Malegaon corporation.
The ACB officer claimed the accused demanded Rs 10,000 as a bribe from each of them, and this was verified in Aug and again in Nov. The funds were also arranged, and there were several attempts to give the bribe, but the accused evaded the traps.
The officer said that after the action, the ACB will monitor the applications and get them approved on the basis of merit. It is the mandate that ACB has to ensure that after the action taken on the concerned officer, it has to see that justice is done with the complainant’s requests.
