Delhi schools closed till January 15 amid cold wave, ETEducation
Schools in Delhi will remain closed till January 15 as part of the winter vacation announced by the Directorate of Education (DoE), Government of NCT of Delhi. The dates are part of the official academic calendar for the 2025–26 session and apply to schools across the national capital.
The winter break, which began on January 1, was scheduled keeping in view the harsh winter conditions usually experienced in Delhi during early January. Cold mornings, dense fog, and low visibility often make it difficult for young students to commute safely, especially during early school hours.
As per the official DoE calendar for the 2025–26 session, regular classes will start only after the winter vacation ends. The calendar helps schools plan holidays and academic activities for the year.
Extension of winter break amid cold wave conditions
Winter vacations in Delhi are meant to keep students safe from very cold weather, especially younger children in primary and middle classes. Mornings can be very cold, which can cause health problems like colds, coughs, and other breathing issues.
The DoE usually follows a set winter break schedule to keep it the same for all schools and to avoid confusion for parents and students. The January 1–15 vacation period is listed as a standard holiday block in the academic calendar.
Parents raise concerns over private schools opening
Despite the winter break being officially scheduled till January 15, some parents have raised concerns on social media about private schools reopening during the cold wave.
Parents have shared on X that some private schools are opening even though winter vacation is officially till January 15. One post said that while schools in Delhi are supposed to be closed, some schools in the Saket area are planning to open early, and parents are asking the authorities to step in.
Another post said that government schools in Delhi are closed because of extreme cold, but some private schools are still holding classes. The post said children are going to school in freezing mornings and asked that safety rules be followed in all schools.
In a separate post addressed to the Directorate of Education, a parent said that schools such as DAV Vikaspuri in New Delhi are planning to reopen for all students despite the ongoing cold wave. The post urged the authorities to consider extending the winter vacation further, citing concerns over children’s health and safety.
As of now, no separate clarification has been issued by the Directorate of Education in response to these complaints. Parents are awaiting further guidance to ensure uniform implementation of the winter vacation across all schools in Delhi.
