DDPIs asked to depute PE teachers to govt schools, ETEducation
Mangaluru: Following a request from the Karnataka State SDMC Coordination Committee, the dept of school education and literacy has directed DDPIs across the state to depute physical education (PE) teachers from nearby schools to institutions lacking them for at least two days a week.
The move aims to ensure that students in govt schools are not deprived of basic physical education. SDMC Coordination Committee president Mohidduin Kutty said the campaign began in Aug with a memorandum to senior officials and ministers, and received a positive response.
The arrangement is expected to benefit nearly 700-800 schools by providing basic sports education and training.
A departmental circular noted that allocation of PE teachers based on students’ strength, especially in rural areas, has left many schools without PE instruction due to staff shortage. Hence, teachers are to be shared among nearby schools twice a week.
In Dakshina Kannada district alone, there are 287 vacancies for PE teachers in govt higher primary schools, with only 160 posts filled. Of 170 govt high schools, only 132 have PE teachers. Despite rules mandating a PE teacher in higher primary schools having over 200 students, several such schools lack one. Kutty said shortages exist across all districts in the state.
