Contract teachers stage rally at Osmania University demanding job regularisation, ET Education
Hyderabad: Contract assistant professors from across Telangana headed to Osmania University on Wednesday in the wake of the ‘Chalo Osmania’ call given by the Telangana State Universities Contract Teachers Joint Action Committee.
Around 400 faculty members took out a rally from Arts College to the administration building as part of the protest. The protest was organised to demand the regularisation of their jobs and to condemn the ‘arrest’ of faculty members a couple of days ago during one of their protests.
“Two days ago, police picked up 18 faculty members who were among those protesting at the OU campus and later released them in the evening. Today’s ‘Chalo Osmania’ is organised to show our solidarity with the arrested teachers and against the OU administration for not allowing us to express our dissent by organising protests,” said Anand G, a contract faculty at OU.
After the rally, teachers organised a sit-in protest in front of the administration building. “We have been on an indefinite strike since April 19 with the sole demand of regularisation of our jobs. Today, the administration did not even allow us to erect a tent, leaving us with no option except to protest in the scorching heat,” said Vineeta Pandey, who has worked as a contract faculty under the university for the past 23 years.
BC leader R Krishnaiah, BJP Adilabad district MLA Payal Shankar, and former chairman of the Higher Education Council T Papi Reddy, among others, extended their support to the protesting teachers. Protests also continued at other state universities in Telangana.
