New Delhi: While many govt schools in the capital continue to grapple with basic infrastructure issues, a few are now taking meaningful steps to create barrier-free campuses for students with disabilities. A major revamp is underway at a govt school in Laxmi Bai Nagar to make the campus fully accessible for children with special needs (CWSN) and other differently abled students.

“The work includes tactile flooring, extending from the main gate to the main building, to help visually impaired students navigate independently,” said an official. The plan also includes clear signage across the campus and designated parking spaces for students with disabilities. “Once the campus is made barrier-free, differently abled students will feel more welcome and less dependent.

These upgrades should be implemented in all schools,” the official added. In south Delhi, a similar initiative is taking shape at another govt school, where handrails and tactile pathways are being planned. “The project is still in its early stages,” said an administrator.
