LD Arts College student found hanging at Gujarat University’s guest house; probe underway, ETEducation
Ahmedabad: A 21-year-old student of LD Arts College was found hanging in a guest house on the Gujarat University campus on Friday evening. Police said the student, identified as Maheshwari Khachar, was staying at the guest house as an attendee of the National Service Scheme (NSS) camp held at the university. This is the second student suicide reported in a week. On Monday, a first-year nursing student in Nadiad hanged himself for being accused of body-shaming a professor.
According to Gujarat University police inspector Shilpa Bava, the incident came to light around 6pm when Khachar was seen hanging from a window grille in her room at the guest house located opposite the NRI hostel. Police rushed to the spot after being alerted by other students and university staff. No note was found and police said a preliminary examination of her mobile phone has not revealed any message or chat indicating the reason behind the suicide. A forensics team collected evidence from the scene.
Khachar, a final semester student at LD Arts College, hailed from Botad and lived in the Ranip area as a paying guest. Police said she had moved into the guest house for a month along with a friend for the ongoing NSS activities. An active NCC volunteer, Khachar had recently been appointed as senior volunteer for her work. On Friday, she attended university programmes in the morning and was scheduled to go to the airport in the evening as part of an NSS assignment to receive guests arriving from Kolkata, police said.
She had left the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hall on the university campus around 3.30pm and failed to report for the evening assignment, leading a professor to ask another student to call her. The student found her hanging in the room and immediately reported the matter to other students and faculty members. Police and the 108 EMRI services were informed. Khachar was declared dead at the spot.
Police, having filed a case of accidental death, are questioning friends and classmates to ascertain circumstances leading to the incident.
