Dept warns Sanskrit colleges’ faculty of withholding salaries ‘idling’ during class hours, ETEducation
Bhubaneswar: The higher education department has warned of withholding the salaries of faculty members of Sanskrit colleges if they are found wasting time during class hours and stopping grant-in-aid for the institutes.
The warning came after a surprise visit by Saroj Laxmi Singh, regional director of education (RDE), Bhubaneswar zone, to two aided Sanskrit colleges in Cuttack on Friday. During the visit, Singh said there was not a single student present in any class or anywhere on campus during class hours in either institute.
“Besides, teaching and non-teaching staff were found sitting idle and browsing on their mobile phones. Violating govt rules further, principals and some staff did not sign the attendance registers for the last three to four days,” she added.
“When the principals were asked to produce biometric attendance records, lesson plans of teachers, student attendance records and cash books, among other records, they could not do so on ‘vague’ grounds, which was not acceptable at all,” Singh said.
In a directive to principals of all non-govt aided Sanskrit colleges on Saturdays, Singh informed that he and other officials of the directorate will henceforth make more surprise visits to all colleges. If any negligence in duty was found during the visits, stringent action would be taken against them and other staff. “Their salaries will be withheld and, subsequently, the grant-in-aid of the college will also be withheld under the Odisha Education Act, 1969,” he said.
The department mandates a seven-hour work rule for both teaching and non-teaching staff of all colleges, including Sanskrit colleges. Principals of all govt, aided and unaided colleges must ensure that teaching and non-teaching staff are present on campus from 10 am to 5 pm every working day and submit their biometric attendance.
There are around 180 Sanskrit colleges in the state with a seat strength of 9,212, all affiliated to Shree Jagannath Sanskrit University.
