Karnataka higher education minister urges govt college teachers and students to speak in English on campus, ETEducation
Bengaluru: Higher education minister MC Sudhakar urged govt college teachers to speak in English on campus to help students improve their speaking skills in the language.
The minister said: “The medium of education in the degree colleges is English. But I do not know how many people speak in English on the college premises. We have got the highest respect for our mother tongue Kannada. We speak it at home and outside. But the more you try to speak a language, the faster you learn,” he said, observing that English-speaking skills will also boost students’ confidence levels.
He addressed principals of various first-grade and polytechnic colleges at RC College of Commerce and Management, where a joint project by the British Council, Microsoft India and the state govt — the English Skills for Youth programme — was extended to more colleges.
The project to instil English-speaking skills is currently in place in 16 govt engineering colleges. This is being extended to 29 first-grade colleges and 25 polytechnics. With this, around 10,000 students will have access to learning resources, digital tools and peer learning through English practice clubs, where they can learn to speak English at their own pace.
“You should first speak amongst yourselves (faculty) in English. This is where the change is going to come in. Then you should start speaking to the students in English,” he recommended.
