
Chennai colleges plan to integrate AI into degree programmes, ETEducation
Chennai: After generative AI tools captured the imagination of students, arts and science colleges in the city are planning to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into degree programmes in the next academic year. Some colleges are planning to change the nomenclature to reflect the change in curriculum, while others are planning to offer it as add-on courses.Ethiraj College for Women is planning to establish a centralized AI lab to impart AI-related skills to a large number of students. “We are planning to establish a new lab with AI tools and software needed for AI. This lab will be in addition to existing labs for computer science students,” said S Uma Gowrie, principal of Ethiraj College For Women.
The college is also planning to change the nomenclature of some of the courses to mark the integration of AI into the curriculum. “BSc Computer Science course will be changed to BSc Computer Science with AI, and BSc Visual Communication will be changed to BSc Visual Communication with AI,” she said.
Women’s Christian College (WCC) is also planning to offer AI and robotics to all students as an add-on course on the campus from the next academic year. “In collaboration with our partner institutions in the US, we are planning to offer online and offline courses in AI and robotics. These courses will be open to all students on the campus. We are also planning to launch BSc Computer Science with AI from the next academic year,” said Lillian Jasper, principal of WCC.
Madras Christian College is planning to integrate computer applications with basic science courses, including BSc Maths and BSc Physics. “The courses will be known as BSc Maths with Computer Science and BSc Physics with Computer Science. About 25% to 30% of the syllabus will be computer science-related topics,” said Paul Wilson, principal of MCC.
DG Vaishnav College is planning to introduce programming languages like Python and R, and data analytics, to BSc Maths students. “In physics, we are planning to integrate robotics with the curriculum,” said S Santhosh Baboo, principal of DG Vaishnav College.
