Tambaram corporation launches chess training for students, ETEducation
Chennai: Students in Tambaram corporation schools will soon get a chance to turn their love for chess into serious training, as the civic body has launched a chess talent development programme to promote extra-curricular activities among corporation school students.
The corporation has partnered with Chess Bishop, a private chess coaching organization, to implement the programme across its schools. There are a total of 35 corporation schools under the civic body, with at least 1,000 students currently enrolled. As part of the initiative, 50 students from each of the five zones under the corporation will be selected.
Corporation officials said the students will be provided with 12 months of online chess training, with 24/7 access to learning modules. Each online membership costs 1,310, while the premium leatherette chess kits provided to students cost 900 per unit. All these facilities will be offered free of cost to the selected students. The corporation allocated a total budget of 25 lakh for the programme.
To identify talented students, a chess assessment event will be conducted in all five zones of the corporation. S Sankara Perumal, president of the Tamil Nadu physical education teacher and physical director association, welcomed the move.
“Chess is not just a game of board and pieces; it reflects real life. Moving a pawn is like taking a step in the world; you never know when the opponent will attack. Not all students are interested in outdoor games, and chess helps improve IQ over time,” he said.
Corporation commissioner S Balachander said the initiative is part of a larger plan to bridge the gap between private and govt schools. “We are starting with chess, but in the future, we will introduce more extracurricular and academic-oriented activities for corporation school students,” he said.
