Kerala’s educational achievements a matter of national pride, says Vice-President, ETEducation
Thiruvananthapuram: Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan stated that Kerala’s accomplishments in education and literacy are a matter of national pride. Educational institutions that uphold constitutional values strengthen the unity and social bonds of the country. He was speaking at the closing ceremony of year-long platinum jubilee celebrations of Mar Ivanios College, held at the college grounds.
Education should prioritise beyond mere degrees and employment, focusing on personality development and fostering social responsibility. National Education Policy aims for a significant transformation to prepare the youth for the future, emphasising creative thinking and research.
Students should learn to use advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain responsibly, upholding ethical values. They should respect diversity, develop scientific awareness and turn challenges into opportunities, he said.
Vision of late archbishop Mar Ivanios, who viewed education as a means to liberate people from ignorance, is the driving force behind the growth of the college. The international standard research facilities being established at the Ivanian Research Centre, as part of the platinum jubilee, will be beneficial for future growth, the Vice-President noted.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in his keynote address, stated that through precise interventions by state govt, the higher education sector was elevated to international standards. Significant development occurred at both the foundational and academic levels over the past decade. Initiatives such as translational research centres worth Rs 200 crore, four-year degree courses, high-quality research awards and scholarships were implemented.
Mar Ivanios College, established in 1949 by archbishop Mar Ivanios, was inspired by thoughts of Shantiniketan which dreamed of free knowledge and fearless minds. Starting with 145 students, it grew into one of Kerala’s premier large colleges, transforming children from ordinary families into excellent individuals while imparting life lessons and social responsibility, he said.
