Hundreds of students march to Nagpur University demanding reforms in academics, admissions and exams, ETEducation
Nagpur: Hundreds of students under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday staged a protest march to Nagpur University campus, alleging issues in academic management, admissions, examinations, results, curriculum, and recruitment. Many students from Nagpur and neighbouring districts joined in solidarity, demanding urgent reforms.
A memorandum containing 36 demands was submitted to registrar Rajesh Hiwase to be forwarded to the acting vice-chancellor Madhavi Khode-Chaware, listing problems in admissions, results, infrastructure, and student representation.
ABVP demanded that the academic calendar be finalised with August 15 as the last date for admission and followed strictly. The admission process should be modern, transparent, and student-friendly, with updates sent directly to registered mobile numbers, they said and demanded that students union elections, pending for years, must be held immediately.
The students alleged increased interference of agents and brokers in admissions, which they said should be curbed through strict action. They also said the fee structures must be made transparent and published on the university website.
The students called for a uniform syllabus, exams within 45 days as per UGC rules, and issuance of hall tickets at least 10 days prior exam. “Exam duties should be rotated every 15 days so teaching is not disrupted, and all exams should be conducted at the university level to maintain quality,” they said. The students also sought exam fee refund for flood-affected students.
ABVP also pressed for committees with student representation to review the NEP, the introduction of regional language courses, quick appointments of qualified and permanent faculty, and fair recruitment of clock hour basis (CHB) professors.
Other demands included regular audit disclosures, library inspections and updates, student representation in all committees, better hostel, sports and gym facilities, CCTV cameras, prompt revaluation refunds, and modern university sub-centres.
Students stated that the infrastructure needs improvement, while alleging that websites are outdated, and demanded accountability. ABVP pointed out basic facilities like fans, clean water, and functional labs are missing at exam centres.
The registrar assured students that the administration would discuss all demands and work toward positive solutions.
