This Research On “Leaderboards” Shows Why Blooket Is Now My Favorite Online Learning Game
A study (that is not behind a paywall) was recently summarized in an Edutopia email newsletter (that is not linkable).
The textbox above highlights its conclusions – online game leaderboards can have detrimental effects on those students who typically just don’t do very well in them. Nobody wants everyone to see them at the bottom of the leaderboard.
However, some Blooket games offer the opportunity for students to “steal” points from other competitors, so those leaderboards don’t necessarily show who is answering the most questions correctly. That’s why I tended to use Blooket games for review, and Wayground/Quizizz for their other activities (flashcards, video quizzes, etc.).
I don’t think, but may be wrong, that other learning game platforms offer the same feature.
