Mumbai: At least two govt colleges are on the list of Mumbai University (MU)-affiliated colleges that are not yet accredited or do not have a college development committee (CDC). These colleges are likely to be fined and barred by MU from admitting students in the coming academic year.

Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari, is among the 80 colleges that do not have a CDC, and Ratnagiri’s Government College of Pharmacy is among the 156 unaccredited colleges under MU.

The state govt has been urging colleges to get accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council or National Board of Accreditation and to establish a CDC since National Education Policy’s implementation in 2022.

At a recent management council meeting, MU resolved to slap a fine of Rs 10,000 on both categories of colleges. The names of these colleges will be published on the MU portal. These colleges either do not have accreditation or failed to re-apply after their accreditation lapsed. Many of the colleges that failed to go through the accreditation process are private unaided colleges.

“It is ironical that govt has been pushing colleges to get themselves accredited and set up CDCs when two of its own colleges failed in compliance,” said an MU senate member.
