VC search panels likely to hand over names to govt by month-end, ETEducation
Trichy: Vice-chancellor search committees of three state universities are in the process of finalising panels of names for the positions and likely to submit them to the govt by this month.
For Periyar University, the three-member committee has scrutinised applications and fixed an interview at Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) in Chennai on Jan 24 to select three candidates. For Bharathidasan University, a meeting of the VC search committee to scrutinize applications is scheduled for Jan 13, after which members are expected to shortlist candidates for interview. For Bharathiar University, search committee members said they are set to meet shortly in the coming days and complete the process. Multiple search committee members said the processes will be completed by this month.
Former AUT president K Pandiyan said the govt hopes that a Supreme Court order will come in its favour, enabling it to appoint VCs. “With the higher education system derailed due to headless universities in Tamil Nadu, we hope for early relief from the apex court,” he said.
While it was believed that the matter was coming up for hearing the coming week, DMK MP Wilson told TOI on Saturday that he had not got any notification to his office regarding this. Wilson is representing the Tamil Nadu govt in this case at the apex court.
Recently, the govt had notified extension of tenures for these three committees until March 21 after they became inactive following the Madras high court’s stay on VC appointments in May last year. However, in its recent order, the govt urged the panels to resume work, citing that the HC stay did not restrain their functioning.
