Dartmouth College was the victim of a hacking incident in August that resulted in the theft of information about more than 35,000 people from multiple states, according to The Record from Recorded Future News.

The security breach was part of an attack by cybercriminals against Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) software, which Dartmouth and other higher ed institutions use to manage operations.

Dartmouth, which confirmed the leak to SecurityWeek last week, discovered in late October that hackers had obtained files that contained individuals’ personal and financial details, including Social Security numbers. College administrators have since notified authorities in California, Maine, New Hampshire and Texas that residents of their states have been impacted, The Record reported.

“Upon discovering the incident, we immediately took measures to secure the environment, notified law enforcement, and launched an investigation,” read the notice sent to California regulators. “We regret any concern this incident may cause. To help prevent something like this from happening again, we implemented all publicly available patches provided following the incident for the Oracle EBS software and will continue to vet our vendors’ data security practices.”

Dartmouth also offered those affected a free one-year membership to an identity protection service.

The Ivy League college in New Hampshire is the latest wealthy institution to come under attack by hackers.
