
Andhra Pradesh to distribute free spectacles to 94,689 students on Feb 3, ETEducation
Vijayawada: As part of the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, the state govt will launch the free distribution of spectacles to 94,689 school students across Andhra Pradesh from Feb 3.Health minister Y Staya Kumar Yadav, along with civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohaor will formally launch the state-level distribution programme in Tenali on Feb 3.
According to officials, free spectacles will be distributed across all Assembly constituencies by respective legislators and public representatives. Eye screening camps were conducted between July and Nov last year for students aged 6 to 18 years studying in selected govt schools. The examinations were carried out by paramedical ophthalmic assistants.
Out of the students screened, 94,689 children were diagnosed with vision problems requiring corrective spectacles. Based on the prescriptions, spectacles were already prepared and are ready for distribution.
The govt is spending approximately Rs 2.52 crore on this initiative, which aims to improve eye health among schoolchildren, enhance classroom learning outcomes, and prevent avoidable visual impairment at an early age.
