Ahmedabad: Following the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) investigations into dummy students, Ahmedabad Rural district education officer (DEO) Krupa Jha has issued a circular to all schools emphasising strict adherence to student attendance norms. The circular highlights that regular attendance during academic days is mandatory, and surprise inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance. Schools found violating norms regarding student attendance or staff qualifications stand to face strict disciplinary action. As per the circular, all schools affiliated to CBSE and other boards have commenced the new academic session, while those affiliated to the state board are preparing for upcoming admissions. All schools, irrespective of affiliation, are required to implement attendance policies effectively from the start of the session, it states.
Guidelines state that schools must follow the academic annual calendar released by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), which defines academic sessions, holidays, and instructional days. Each student registered in the school must be present during the academic hours on all working days, and the schools must ensure that a minimum of 80% attendance is maintained by each student.
If a student is unable to meet the 80% attendance requirement due to unavoidable circumstances, the school must apply for an exemption with supporting documents through the DEO office.
The circular also emphasises that only qualified and approved staff should conduct academic activities.
