Chandigarh teachers seek review of decision on winter-break remedial classes, ETEducation
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Teachers’ Association (CTA) has opposed the recent directive on holding remedial classes during winter vacations. They submitted a memorandum to the district education officer, addressed to the director of school education, seeking a review of the decision.
Association representatives, including CTA legal adviser Arvind Rana, general secretary Ajay Sharma, joint secretary Anil Kumar, treasurer Parveen Kaur Mann, and member Monika, said the department’s letter on remedial classes lacked adequate consideration of ground realities.
They said winter vacations are primarily meant to shield students from severe cold, and compelling attendance during this period may expose them to health risks.
The association said teachers are willing to support the department in improving academic performance but argued that calling students to school during vacations may not achieve the desired outcome. They added that many teachers and students already have travel plans for the vacation period, and sudden changes cause inconvenience. They suggested shifting remedial classes to online mode, as done in previous years.
The representatives further said attendance during such classes is likely to remain low and may defeat the objective of remedial support. They proposed that, if required, teachers can devote additional time to students once schools reopen after vacations.
The memorandum requests the education authorities to reconsider the current plan and opt for an online format for remedial teaching instead of offline classes during the winter break.
