
Student dies of epileptic attack at IIT-Bhilai: Medical negligence alleged, ETEducation
Raipur: A BTech student residing at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai hostel, died on Tuesday, a day after the institute’s fifth convocation.
The deceased, Soumil Sahu (18), hailed from Harda Bypass in Hoshangabad district, Madhya Pradesh, and was in the first semester, studying Electrical Engineering . Durg Superintendent of Police (SP) Vijay Agrawal confirmed that Sahu suffered an epileptic attack around 10 am on Tuesday. He was rushed to Sparsh Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. He said that a case was registered after the death was reported.
IIT Bhilai spokesperson Ratandeep Samant said the death was natural. The exact cause of death could be confirmed only after the medical report is received, he added.
Meanwhile, students staged a demonstration following the death, alleging medical negligence at the institute. Sources within the IIT said Sahu had a fever on Monday. He had visited the health centre situated on the institute premises. The sources alleged that he was not diagnosed properly at the centre.
When Sahu’s condition worsened, he was taken back to the health centre on Tuesday, from where he was then referred to the private hospital, added the sources.
IIT-Bhilai released a statement, which said, “It is with profound sorrow that we inform of the loss of Mr Soumil Sahu, a first semester student of BTech in Electrical Engineering, on Tuesday, 11 Nov 2025. Soumil was a brilliant young mind, whose tragic, untimely, and unexpected demise has left the entire IIT Bhilai community in a state of deep shockand grief…..our thoughts and prayers are entirely with his parents and friends in this difficult moment of crisis.”
