Chennai: The BJP govt at the Centre on Monday strengthened DMK’s stand against the three-language policy, saying there are no sanctioned Tamil teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in TN.
In the wake of the ongoing controversy, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi sought details of the number of Tamil, Hindi, and Sanskrit faculties currently working in KVs in TN.
Responding to her question, the Union education ministry said, “The sanctioned posts of teachers in KVs were for Hindi, English, and Sanskrit. There is, however, an enabling provision for teaching other languages for willing students between classes six and eight. As per the provision, a teacher can be engaged on a part-time contractual basis if 15 or more students opt for it.”
Citing the fact that there are no permanent teachers for Tamil in KVs in TN, Union govt said, “The teachers engaged in KVs on a part-time contractual basis for teaching Tamil as opted by the students is 24. Additionally, learning of the Tamil language in 21 KVs is being undertaken through the Tamil Virtual Academy, an autonomous organisation in TN. There are 86 Hindi and 65 Sanskrit teachers working in TN presently.”
Citing this, Kanimozhi said on X, “Does the Constitution define Hindi or Sanskrit as national language? Or is it nationalism that BJP wants to build? Which mother tongue are you protecting or teaching through KVs?”
