The School of Open Learning (SOL) has developed a sports policy for the first time. This policy, designed to empower students as athletes, includes three categories for fee waivers. Additionally, SOL has provisions for cash awards ranging from 20,000 to one lakh rupees.
Until now, no policy was in place to promote sports at SOL. While regular colleges under Delhi University have sports quotas with specific policies for admissions, such a quota couldn’t be implemented at SOL. Therefore, this policy was formulated in this manner.
Prof. Payal Mago, Director of SOL, explained that the sports policy aims to promote excellence in sports, reward students who perform exceptionally in international, national, and state-level competitions, and provide cash prizes and fee waivers.
Prof. Mago further emphasized that the goal of the New Education Policy 2020 is to promote the holistic development of students, which includes not only theoretical knowledge but also sports, a crucial and equal component of education. It is essential for the physical and mental well-being of students. Keeping this importance in mind, the sports policy was created.
The sports policy defines three categories: A, A-1, and B. Category A includes competitions such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, South Asian Games, World Cup, World Championships, Para World Championships, Para Olympics, Para Asian Games, and Special Olympics.
If a student from SOL participates in any of these competitions and wins 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, they will not only receive a cash prize of one lakh rupees but their fees will also be completely waived. The cash award will be given at the end of the academic session.
Category A-1 includes the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Trophy. Winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in this event will earn a cash prize of 75,000 rupees and a fee waiver of up to Rs 35,000.
Category B covers national-level competitions such as the National Sports Championship, Federation Cup, National Inter-Zonal Competitions, and Para-National Championships. In this category, a 1st place finish will earn Rs 40,000, 2nd place will earn Rs 30,000, and 3rd place will receive Rs 20,000. A 75% fee waiver will also be granted.
