Textbooks to be given in two phases to cut school bag burden, ETEducation
Jaipur: School education department Saturday announced it will distribute textbooks in two stages for students of classes 1 to 5 from the 2026–27 academic session, so that children carry only essential books and the weight of their school bag is reduced.
School education secretary Krishna Kunal said, “Textbooks will be distributed in two stages so that students carry only what they need. This will reduce the weight of school bags by nearly 50%, which will positively impact children’s physical health and learning capacity.”
From the 2027–28 session onwards, the department plans to switch to quarterly distribution of textbooks.
“Once the quarterly system is implemented, the overall load of school bags will come down further — to about 25% of what students currently carry,” Kunal said.
Officials said the initiative is intended to make schooling “less burdensome and more enjoyable” for children. The department believes lighter bags will encourage regular attendance, increase interest in learning, and ease parents’ concerns.
The decision is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses on reducing unnecessary academic pressure and promoting holistic, child-centred education.
The state govt is simultaneously working on infrastructure upgrades, digital and ICT-based teaching, boosting enrolment, cutting dropouts, and strengthening inclusive education.
