Students Hospitalized After Toxic Fumes from Health Centre Affect School in Bastar’s Kanker, ETEducation
RAIPUR: Eight students of a private school in Chhattisgarh‘s Kanker district, have fallen sick after allegedly inhaling toxic fumes that drifted into the school premises from a nearby sub-health centre, where expired medicines were reportedly being burnt.
According to teachers, fumes from the burning stock entered the classrooms, causing several children to complain of breathlessness, nausea and dizziness.
As soon as their condition deteriorated, school staff rushed the children to the Pakhanjur Civil Hospital. All eight children have been admitted and are currently stated to be stable.
The incident took place on Monday near PV-43 Jayashri Nagar, where the school is located.
Hospital authorities said their condition is out of danger, though monitoring is ongoing. Some teachers and parents who were present at the school also reported discomfort, raising concerns that the fumes may have affected more people than initially identified.
Parents and locals have demanded an immediate inquiry into the incident, questioning whether proper protocols were followed during the disposal of medicines at the sub-health centre. They allege that burning medical waste in an open area near a school amounts to negligence.
Officials are expected to examine whether waste-disposal procedures were violated and if any lapse led to the release of toxic gases that endangered schoolchildren.
