Parents take away wards from private college’s hostel after student’s murder, ET Education
Keonjhar: After a student was strangled to death by three of his coaching mates at a private college’s hostel in Keonjhar district late Monday night, panic-stricken parents rushed to evacuate their children on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
Nearly 60 students, who were staying at the facility for a one-month summer bridge course before their Class XI admissions, vacated the premises. The course, costing between Rs 7,000-8,000 including boarding charges, was halfway through its completion scheduled for May 8.
“We provide bridge courses to help students prepare for their matric exams and guide their future studies,” said Ajay Das, a teaching staff member supervising the courses. “The incident occurred after 1 am when the warden had retired for the night.”
Police investigation revealed that the accused students were staying in the same room as the deceased. The main accused, reportedly known for aggressive behaviour, carried out the attack with two accomplices when most students were away on leave.
“The three accused were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, Keonjhar, and later transferred to an observation home in Rourkela after their bail pleas were rejected,” a police source said.
District education officer (DEO), Purna Chandra Bariha, said, “I cannot comment until I have thoroughly reviewed the case.”
The hostel, which has 18 rooms and typically accommodates 80 students, now stands largely empty as parents continue to take their children away following the death.
