Computer science & information systems soared from the 751-850 band in 2025 to 251-300 ranking

Varanasi: Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) achieved its best-ever ranking in QS World University Rankings by Subject for the year 2026 for excellence in academics and research. In addition to expanding number of ranked subjects, IIT-BHU witnessed sharp rise in ranks in international recognition of its core engineering and science disciplines. Of the 14 subjects considered, 13 were ranked and three disciplines were placed in top 250, while seven in top 300 worldwide. Overall, 11 disciplines of IIT (BHU) were placed in top 500.IIT-BHU spokesperson said the institute’s engineering and technology subjects performance exceptionally well, with several subjects climbing over 200 places compared to last year’s ranking. Civil engineering entered the 201-275 band for the first time, while electrical and mechanical engineering secured strong positions in the 201-250 band. Chemical engineering was in the 251-300 band, while materials science followed suit in same category.

Computer science & information systems soared from the 751-850 band in 2025 to 251-300 ranking. In a new addition to its list of ranked subjects, the institute’s pharmacy discipline positioned in the 201-250 band. Biological sciences got its first-time subject ranking of 651-700.

Engineering & Technology subject area climbed to a rank band of 332 from last year’s 501-550 band. In natural sciences, the institute ranked in the 451-500 band. The growth reflected across board, with physics & astronomy (rank band 351-400), mathematics (301-350), and environmental sciences (401-450). This exceptional performance underscores the institute’s growing global reputation for academic excellence and high-impact research.

QS Ranking by Subject assessment is based on five ranking lenses such as academic reputation, employer reputation, citation per paper, h-index, and international research network.

Institute director Prof Amit Patra said, “As we look ahead, our focus will remain on further deepening our research impact, expanding global partnerships and building on this momentum to continue our upward trajectory in the years to come,” he said. He congratulated faculty members, staff, and students for collective efforts and contribution that helped the institute gain global recognition.
