Andhra University to seek ‘special heritage’ tag as it turns 100, ETEducation
Visakhapatnam: Andhra University has drawn up a plan to apply for ‘special heritage status’ under a Union govt scheme as it completes its 100 years of existence in 2026. The scheme guidelines note that the extramural activities of such institutions have often touched the lives of the poorest, with teachings emphasising selfless service guided by the principle of ‘giving back to society’. It is therefore deemed necessary to recognise and reward such heritage institutions, enabling them to continue inspiring younger generations with the value of true education.Since its establishment in 1926, Andhra University has made historically significant, integrated, and socially relevant contributions — reflecting the very essence of heritage. The university has produced generations of scholars, scientists, and professionals who have made notable contributions across fields such as literature, science, technology, and public service. It has played a pioneering role in promoting higher education in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, conducting research, offering specialised courses, and supporting regional development.
Although its current jurisdiction covers only a few districts, the university originally extended from Srikakulam to Nellore (with the Ceded districts included for the first few months). Historians note that it took nearly a decade of persistent efforts by several leaders before the erstwhile Madras Presidency granted approval for the university to serve the then educationally backward Northern Circars and Ceded districts. The jurisdiction of the university has reduced ever since the state govt decided to launch one university per district starting in 2006.
Even in terms of its built heritage, Andhra University remains one of the few campuses in the country that still retains buildings in colonial and Art Deco architectural styles. The physics college is a prime example of colonial architecture, while the engineering college blocks and the Vizianagaram Palace building exemplify Art Deco, and are likely among the largest such structures built on the east coast during the 1930-1960 period.
Institutions granted heritage status may use funds flexibly for the conservation of intellectual and physical heritage assets, including libraries, museums, and scientific instruments. Grants may support renovation, technological upgrades, heritage study programmes, and community outreach initiatives aimed at promoting awareness, documentation, and preservation of regional cultural and architectural heritage. This includes conservation and maintenance, as well as improving the utilisation of heritage buildings without compromising their character or status.
Speaking to TOI, Andhra University vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar said that the university has prepared an extensive 15-page document detailing the heritage significance of the campus and institutional legacy. “The document showcases the historical, academic, architectural, and cultural contributions of the university, highlighting its enduring impact on education and society. We will first submit the document for vetting to the state education department. After incorporating necessary modifications, it will be forwarded to the Union govt for heritage status. Meanwhile, the university has also prepared a separate proposal for state govt funding for the centenary celebrations,” said Prof Rajasekhar.
