AHMEDABAD: A Class 6 student at a private school in Maninagar area of Ahmedabad allegedly mixed a chemical substance into a classmate’s water bottle following a verbal altercation, raising concerns over student safety on school premises.
Ahmedabad city district education officer Rohit Chaudhary confirmed the incident, which took place at Durga School around four days ago. “The two students had a verbal exchange a few days earlier. Allegedly nursing a grudge, one of them added a chemical tablet to the other student’s water bottle while it was kept in the classroom,” Chaudhary said.
Unaware of the contamination, the affected student consumed some water but stopped after noticing an unusual smell. Shortly thereafter, the child began vomiting. Teachers immediately informed the school management, and the student underwent medical treatment.
Given the seriousness of the incident, the school management reviewed CCTV footage installed on the campus. Officials said the footage showed a student mixing a tablet into the water bottle. Both students were questioned, and their parents were called to the school.
Officials stated that the affected student was stable and no further medical complications were reported. The matter was mutually resolved by the parents, who decided not to lodge a police complaint.
School trustee H N Patel and principal Ketan Shah were unavailable for comment.
The incident comes amid growing concern over student safety in the city schools. In Jan, a Class 10 student was assaulted by a mob outside National School in Ghatlodia, while an earlier fatal assault outside Seventh Day Adventist School in Sep 2025 raised questions about student behaviour and supervision.>
