Student threatened, chased with knife over snack request at Chhattisgarh university hostel; cook, mess worker arrested, ETEducation
RAIPUR: Police arrested a cook and a mess worker on Monday for allegedly chasing and threatening a student with a knife following an argument over snacks at Guru Ghasidas Central University, Bilaspur. The incident, which occurred at the university’s Tantya Bhil Boys’ Hostel, was captured on CCTV and the footage has since surfaced on social media.
The victim, Harsh Agarwal, a third-year BTech student, filed a complaint at the Koni police station on January 11.
According to the report, the altercation began around 6 pm when Agarwal asked the mess staff to serve ‘aloogunda’ (a potato snack) to another student. The staff members, identified as Deepak Kewat (21) and Dipendra Kewat (19), reportedly refused the request and began using abusive language.
The situation escalated when the duo climbed onto the mess platform and chased Agarwal with a knife. The student managed to escape and reach his friends, though the accused allegedly continued to threaten his life.
Koni police officials stated that two accused, both residents of Karhi in Janjgir-Champa district, were apprehended within 24 hours of the report.
“The police have recovered the knife used in the crime. Both individuals have confessed to the act during interrogation and have been sent on remand,” a police spokesperson said.
The hostel mess is currently managed by a private firm. University authorities are yet to issue a formal statement regarding the safety protocols or the status of the private firm’s contract following the violence.
