GTU sacks temporary sports teacher for grave misconduct, ETEducation
Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has sacked a temporary sports teacher at an affiliated college after serious allegations of misconduct and harassment by students in two instances. GTU has also launched a probe in the case.
According to information available from sources, the incident came to light after a female student filed a complaint against Akash Gohil, a sports instructor at an Anand college on an 11-month contract, with GTU’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
The complaint stated that the teacher made indecent demands and molested her on the pretext of helping her. It stated that she got in touch with the teacher during the university’s youth festival in Oct. The teacher remained in touch with her and even met her outside the campus when he allegedly molested her, said the sources.
A college trustee filed another complaint against Gohil with ICC for allegedly forcing boys from the college, whom he accompanied during an event at Somnath earlier this year, to wear girls’ clothes and making them dance. A video related to the incident was also reportedly submitted to the university as evidence, said sources close to the development.
GTU officials said that the ICC made a detailed inquiry and recorded statements from all parties. After the investigation report recommended taking stringent action, the teacher was sacked with immediate effect. GTU registrar K N Kher confirmed that the harassment complaint was received and that action was taken against the named teacher until the probe is complete.
The issue also took a political colour, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) submitting a memorandum highlighting the case and alleging that similar incidents took place at the university earlier. One instance pointed to an officiating registrar’s termination after allegations of indecent demands towards a woman scholar. Student bodies also demanded stringent action against those responsible after thorough investigation.
